A few words about myself
SarahBeth Hartlage was born and raised in North Alabama, where she was instilled with a strong love for science and football. She was a National Merit Scholar and was active in the fine arts and historical preservation in her hometown. She holds a Bachelor of Science in Microbiology from the University of Alabama, where she won the school’s Presidential Scholarship – its highest award – among other honors. She also earned a Master of Science from Tulane University with a focus in Cell and Molecular Biology prior to matriculating at the University of South Alabama College of Medicine. While in medical school, she earned the Alumni Scholarship and was an officer of both the Anesthesia Interest Group and the school’s chapter of the American Medical Women’s Association. She also competed for a scholarship sponsored by Dr. Pepper, winning the 2009 Throw For Dough contest, live on national television.
Dr. Hartlage did her residency in anesthesiology and perioperative medicine at the University of Louisville, where she served as chief resident and subsequently joined the faculty. She has a passion for education and patient care that drives her career activities. Her academic and research interests include trauma care, regional anesthesia, medical education and healthcare simulation, and gender representation and equity in healthcare.
She is an active member of the American Society of Anesthesiology, the Society for Education in Anesthesia – from which she holds a special certification as an educator – and Women in Anesthesia, where she serves on the board as the Social Media Chair.
